Profile

Nevio Leoni's paintings show a bright Portoferraio where neither time or seasons exist, he has taken pains to search out and paint many of its hidden architectural secrets. The artist seems to "clean up" Elba showing us scenes and streets without modern distractions. In fact there are no cars, electric wires or satellite receiver disks. He has removed the shabby buildings put up in recent times and the garish road and shop signs. In short he has eliminated the glaring evidence of modern society. The subjects of his paintings are the streets of the Medicean city of Portoferraio, with the old houses tiled in the traditional Tuscan style, we can also see the city walls, the two forts and the harbour.It is a world where passers-by are strangely absent, human presence is only hinted at in the half open shutters of the windows or in somebody's washing blowing merrily in the wind. The figures he paints are set against coloured or abstract backgrounds. These faces and bodies show us a different type of artistic production. They are in contrast to the scenes of Portoferraio which delight us with traces of the past that are still alive.
